Higher Education in Bangladesh

Ans. The education which is usually offered in the universities is called higher education. It is also known as tertiary education. In Bangladesh, there are two categories of educational institutions which offer higher education: the public and private universities, and colleges affiliated with the National University (NU). At present, there are 37 public universities while there were only four in 1971. Moreover, there are 93 private universities which is relatively a new phenomenon in our country. There are around 1,400 higher education providing colleges also. Public universities are the first choices of most of the students. These universities offer a wide range of subjects in Arts, Science, Commerce, Engineering, etc. They provide better library, laboratory and research facilities to help the young knowledge seekers. Residential and boarding facilities are also available in handful number of public universities. Many students cannot receive higher education from public universities due to lack of capacity. So, they have to depend highly on private universities. But the educational expenses of these universities are too high. As most of the students are from villages and middle class, their families find it difficult to maintain such expenses. It is impossible to solve the problem overnight but it can be checked gradually. The number of universities must be increased in the first case. The poor students should have the accessibility like others. Moreover, the facilities of educational sectors should be increased and upgraded. The government should take the responsibility and initiate necessary steps to solve the problems.

বাংলাদেশে উচ্চশিক্ষা

বাংলা অর্থ: সাধারণত বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়গুলো যে শিক্ষা প্রদান করে তাকে উচ্চশিক্ষা বলা হয়। এটা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় পর্যায়ের বা তৃতীয় পর্যায়ের শিক্ষা নামেও পরিচিত বাংলাদেশে দুই ধরনের শিক্ষা প্রতিষ্ঠান আছে যেগুলো উচ্চশিক্ষা প্রদান করে: সরকারি ও বেসরকারি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়, এবং জাতীয় বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের অধিভুক্ত কলেজসমূহ। বর্তমানে ৩৭টি সরকারি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় আছে যেখানে ১৯৭১ সালে মাত্র ৪টি ছিল। তাছাড়া আমাদের দেশে ৯৩টি বেসরকারি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় আছে যা আপেক্ষিকভাবে একটি নতুন বিষয়। প্রায় ১,৪০০ টি উচ্চ শিক্ষা প্রদানকারী কলেজও আছে। বেশির ভাগ শিক্ষার্থীর প্রথম পছন্দ হচ্ছে সরকারি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়গুলো। এসব বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় কলা, বিজ্ঞান, বাণিজ্য, প্রকৌশলী ইত্যাদি বিষয়ে শিক্ষা প্রদান করে। এগুলো নবীন জ্ঞান অন্বেষণকারীদের সাহায্য করতে উন্নত লাইব্রেরি ও গবেষণা সুযোগ-সুবিধা প্রদান করে। বেশ কিছু সরকারি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়গুলোতে আবাসিক ও বোর্ডিং সুবিধাও রয়েছে। ধারণ ক্ষমতার অভাবের কারণে অধিকাংশ শিক্ষার্থী এসব বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় থেকে উচ্চ শিক্ষা গ্রহণ করতে পারে না। তাই, তাদেরকে বেসরকারি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের ওপর নির্ভর করতে হয়। কিন্তু এসব বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে পড়াশোনার খরচ অনেক। যেহেতু বেশির ভাগ শিক্ষার্থী মধ্যবিত্ত পরিবার এবং গ্রাম থেকে আসে, তাদের পরিবারকে এই খরচ বহন করতে হিমশিম খেতে হয়। এই সমস্যা এক রাতে সমাধান করা হয়তো অসম্ভব, কিন্তু তা ক্রমশ কমানো যেতে পারে। প্রথমত, বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের সংখ্যা অবশ্যই বাড়াতে হবে। দরিদ্র শিক্ষার্থীদেরকে অন্যদের মতো সুযোগ করে দিতে হবে। তাছাড়া, শিক্ষা খাতের সুযোগ-সুবিধা বৃদ্ধি ও উন্নত করা উচিত। সরকারকে সমস্যা সমাধানের লক্ষ্যে দায়িত্ব নিতে হবে এবং যথাযথ পদক্ষেপ গ্রহণ করতে হবে।
